The Youth Partnership Program is the first step in becoming part of the more advanced Howard High School Environmental Connections Program.

To enroll in the Partnership Program, applicants participate in an interview process overseen by their peers and Lookout Mountain Conservancy staff. Upon successful completion of the interview, applicants must provide a school transcript and submit three letters of recommendation to the program.

Life has been hard and the way I have dealt with the stress has been to “go off.” When I came into this program I brought with me a reputation of having a “short fuse.” I wanted to be in this program because I wanted to learn to be a better person.

I have big goals for myself and my temper was getting in the way of me achieving my goals. In a long but short year I have learned to think before I act and I understand that I’m the only one that stands between me and my goal of becoming a defense attorney. This program has provided me with the support and guidance for me to understand that I deserve to be successful!

I came into this program to help the environment and to be a better person. What I found was much more than I ever expected. I found that the environment gave me a sense of belonging and purpose, something I had never felt before. I know that when I’m on the trails and park lands that there’s a sense of pride that doesn’t exist in any other part of my life. I belong and I have a purpose… that’s so cool!

Years before I came into this program I heard a Bible verse that stuck with me. I wasn’t sure of just why, but I could never get it out of my head. The verse is this: “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I wanted to be a part of the intern program because I needed structure and to be challenged in the right way.

I stay in this program because I’m challenged every day to push myself to be a better person, leader and friend. I now know why that Bible verse stuck with me; these past three years have been difficult and without strengthening my relationship with friends, myself and Christ I would not have made it.

I wanted to be a part of this program because I heard the cool stories that were going around the school and decided that’s what I wanted to do. I quickly found out that every intern had their own story to write and tell, including me! My story is about challenge, change and a true desire to make a difference in this world. Being in the intern program has prepared me to write a success story!
