We’re Going to the Birds April 29!

Join us Sunday morning, April 29, 2012 at 8:00 am as LMC Board member and Tennessee Aquarium Associate Curator of Forests Kevin Calhoon leads a bird walk on the Guild/Hardy Trail. We’ll meet Kevin and fellow ornithological enthusiasts at the parking lot on Ochs Highway across from the Trail entrance. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and bring your own water and binoculars or a camera if you wish. The walk should last about two hours. The walk is free and open to the public. We’re moving mountains (of brick) April 21 & 28!

Hello Volunteers!

LMC will be working at the recently-acquired Sexton property this Saturday, April 21 and next Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 9:00 am until 12:00 Noon and we sure could use your help! We’ll be sorting bricks on the property for future use on walkways, trails, and other amenities, as well as other stewardship tasks.

Please come out to Old Wauhatchie Pike to help, and wear sturdy shoes, bring work gloves, and a wheelbarrow if you have one. We will provide water, drinks, and snacks.

Directions: Find your way to the intersection of Cummings Highway and Old Wauhatchie Pike, next to Chattem Company. Stay on Old Wauhatchie Pike, and pull into the first gated entrance along the old stone wall on the right as you drive up Old Wauhatchie Pike, and look for Conservancy staff and other volunteers. If you need additional info, call us at 423-424-3882.

Many thanks to you who give your valuable time and support!

SEE YOU THERE!

MLK Day Brings Volunteers to LMC from Atlanta

Lookout Mountain Conservancy welcomed approximately 30 students from the Weber School in Atlanta on Monday, Martin Luther King Day, to the new LMC park expansion land at Cummings Highway and Old Wauhatchie Pike. Students volunteered their time for the community service work day to celebrate the lessons of Dr. King, including becoming engaged in the world around them and serving local communities.

The students removed invasive plants and overgrowth from a stone wall along Old Wauhatchie Pike that dates back to around 1880. They were educated by LMC staff about the plans for the expansion of John Wilson Park to over 20 acres, and the connection to the Tennessee Riverwalk.

Big and Exciting news!

The Times Free Press breaks the story about Lookout Mountain Conservancy purchasing 7.1 acres at the foot of Lookout Mountain! This property has been owned by 1 family since 1885. Securing this property will allow the Riverwalk to connect to Lookout Mountain and will help create a 20+ acre park that will be the gateway to the mountain.

“All A-board…” for a great holiday gift!

Give a unique holiday gift – a plaque on an LMC trestle!

This holiday season, Lookout Mountain Conservancy has the perfect gift for eveyone on your list – a permanent place on an historic train trestle!

Lookout Mountain Conservancy owns and manages the 5-mile Guild-Hardy Trail on the northern end of Lookout Mountain. The trail was formerly the Narrow Gauge Railroad which included two railroad trestle bridges all dating back to 1889.

When you purchase a plaque to be placed on one of these trestles, you support the Guild-Hardy Trail and other LMC projects and your name (or a friend or family member’s name) becomes a part of Lookout Mountain history.

Please support us with a gift of $100 per plaque to have the name of your choice placed on one end of a plank.  You can make a gift online through the link below and all contributions are tax deductible, and come with our gracious thanks.

Equal to, or greater than
